Katarina Wit first started skating at five years old. The talent she displayed soon became apparent and she was accepted to a private school that caters for kids with a flair for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. Her breakthrough year was in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since then, her grace and elegance captured the eye of all. Then she began dominating the sport. Olympic Success In the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. A few years later she was able to win an even tougher competition. While she was unable to win the free-skating competition, the gold medal was awarded to her performance on the compulsory figures, as well as on the short program. Witt was the first repeat woman to win the women's figure skating since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her success as a movie actress. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she failed to win a single medal, she delighted fans with her seventh place finish. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
